Owls Win 5-2 In Semester Opener
South Windsor, CT --- In their first game back from winter break, The Westfield State University club hockey team defeated Eastern Connecticut 5-2. The Owls would get on the board early when Schyler Reilly redirected a Sean Parsons shot from the point. Cole Connolly would pick up the secondary assist on the goal. Eastern Connecticut would tie the game two minutes later when the Owls failed to clear a rebound in front of netminder J.P. Dineen. Dineen got his first collegiate start in net and played solid for his first win. Westfield pressured in the offensive zone and the line of Matt Spadorica and Joe Almeida would put the Owls back in the lead. Matt Spadorcia would score his first goal of the season with 6:46 remaining in the first period.
Eastern Connecticut would make it 2-2 midway through the second period after a clearing attempt went right to a Warrior defender who ripped a shot from the point past Dineen.
However, it would be all Westfield in the third period as they went on to score three unanswered goals. Colin Pierce, Nick Rose and Will Macdonald would score in the final period to give the Owls the win.
With the win, the Owls improve their record to 5-2-3-1 and are 3-0-3-0 in their last six games. Westfield will travel down to Shelton, CT on Sunday night to play an important divisional game against Sacred Heart. This is the first game of a home and home series with the Pioneers.
