Westfield Falls 6-4 To Bridgewater State

Bridgewater, MA --- In virtually a must win game to keep Westfield's post-season hopes alive, the Owls suffered a heartbreaking loss on Sunday at Bridgewater State by the score of 6-4. Captain, Joey Green, got the Owls' offense started only three minutes into the game when he beat Bear's netminder Matthew Scott. The lead would hold for most of the period but a Kyle Anderson's slap shot from the blue line would send the game tied into the first intermission.

Trailing 2-1 early in the second, Schyler Reilly would score a power play goal to knot it at two a piece. The Owls power play is starting to heat up as they would go 3 for 6 with the man advantage during the game. Colin Pierce would also score a power play goal in a period where the two teams traded goals but the Owls would find themselves trailing 5-3 going into the final twenty minutes.

Westfield would have a great opportunity to get back into the game midway through the third period when they had a five minute power play. Zach Smith would score in his third consecutive game but it was not enough and Bridgewater would go on to win their fourth league game of the season.

Westfield's next game is Sunday at 1:30 as they travel up to UMass Lowell before their Thanksgiving break. The game will be played at the Tsongas Center.

Owls Honor Veterans During Game Versus Coast Guard

Westfield, MA --- The Westfield State University club hockey team hosted the United States Coast Guard Academy in their first annual "Honor our Heroes" game on Monday afternoon. Before the game, American Legion Post 124 posted the colors and Pam Ardito dropped the ceremonial puck drop. After a slow start, Colin Pierce would give the Owls a 1-0 lead going into the first intermission.

Westfield got back to back power play goals to start the second period from Dylan Burns and Schyler Reilly to jump start the Owls offense. The team would go on to score five goals in the second period and would take a commanding 6-0 lead into the final period. Dylan Burns, Colin Pierce and Steve Evans would get the goals in the second period.

Coast Guard would get a quick goal to start the third period when Nick Mombello beat Owls' netminder Nick Liberto. Mombello would pick up the hat trick for the Bears scoring all three of USCGA goals. Dylan Burns would get his third goal of the game 3:29 into the third for the Owls' first hat trick of the season. Steven Evans and Zach Smith would conclude the scoring and the Owls went on to win their fourth game of the season 10-3. Dylan Burns' and Zach Smith's goals were their first in their collegiate careers. After the game, both teams chatted and enjoyed a nice team meal.

Withington Denies Westfield In 3-1 Loss

Westfield, MA --- It was a fast pace first period on Saturday night as the Westfield State Owls hosted New Haven in a NECHA American Conference game at Amelia Park. The Owls controlled most of the play in the New Haven zone but went into the first intermission scoreless. Ian Alexander scored at 14:06 of the second period to get the Chargers on the board. Brandon Martone would create a turnover at center ice and went in on a breakaway for the eventual game-winning goal with 3:27 remaining in the period.

Westfield never gave up and would make it a 2-1 game midway through the third period. Steve Evans skated down the left wing side and found Corey Jenks in front of the net who put it past JP Withington. Withington stood on his head all game stopping 38 shots and was the difference in this game. He also picked up an assist on the last Chargers' goal. The Owls penalty kill had a great night killing all six penalties and picking up a goal but spending half of the third period in the box would kill any chance the Owls had at gaining any momentum. New Haven would add an empty net goal with eight seconds left in the game for the 3-1 final.

Westfield returns to action on Friday night in another key conference game. They will be traveling to Rhode Island College. This will be the first ever meeting between the two teams. First puck drop is scheduled for 8:00pm in Pawtucket, RI.

Goal: Jenks (2)
Saves: Liberto (21 Saves, 1-2-0)
