Worcester, MA -- The Westfield State club hockey team will be bringing back some hardware to Western Avenue this season. The Owls defeated the Bridgewater State University Bears 4-0 at the DCU Center in Worcester on Saturday afternoon in the first annual University Cup. Colin Pierce would put the Owls up 1-0 in the first period after a long period of pressure in the Bears zone. Westfield would increase their lead in the second period when Tyler Reopel would redirect a Connor Sweeney shot from the point on the power play. It was a great game by the special teams, going 1-3 on the power play and they were perfect on the penalty kill. Chase Thornton was fantastic in net picking up the team's first shutout of the season. John Galvin would score a break away goal in the third period. Bridgewater had pressure in the last 5 minutes in the game with Thornton making key saves to preserve the shutout bid. Brian Bassett would seal the victory with his first collegiate goal in the final minute.
The club hockey team would like to thank all of their fans, friends and family for all of their support throughout the season. It was a great way to end the year!
