Westfield Advances To University Cup Finals With 4-2 Win

Lowell, MA -- After a scoreless first period, the two teams battled hard in the second period and would combine for 52 penalty minutes. Cole Connolly would put the Owls on the board with the man advantage half way through the second period. Joe Almeida passed the puck up to the point where Connolly would rip a slap shot to beat the River Hawks netminder glove side. UMass-Lowell would get a power play goal of their own and the teams would head to the second intermission tied at one.

Starting the third period on the power play, Colin Pierce would slide a pass to Owls' Captain Schyler Reilly to put them in the lead just a minute twenty in. It was a special teams battle as both teams would score twice on the man advantage as Lowell would tie the game midway through the third with a shot from the blue line. John Galvin, would give the Owls the 3-2 lead with 6:21 remaining in the game when he was able to tip in a shot in the crease area. Joe Santaniello would score a short-handed empty net goal to give the Owls a 4-2 victory to send then into the championship game of the University Cup.

Westfield will host Rhode Island College on Saturday for their final game on the Fall semester and will be sporting new home jerseys. Details about the University Cup Finals will be released later this week.
