Westfield, MA --- After a sluggish first period, Westfield State went on to score four goals in the first 12 minutes of the second period to take a commanding 4-0 lead. Corey Jenks would get the scoring started with a spin around shot in the slot to beat Riverhawks' goaltender Ray Mortali. It was his first collegiate goal and it gave the Owls a spark. Steve Evans would have himself a great shift scoring two goals in 53 seconds to give the Owls a 3-0 lead. Connor Sweeney and Scott Shannon would pick up the assists on both goals. Connor Sweeney would finish the scoring for the Owls on the man advantage when he skated the puck up ice and fired a wrist shot from the right circle. Westfield went 1 for 6 on the power play while killing 5 of 6 penalties. Peter Hanson would get UMass-Lowell on the scoreboard before the period came to an end. In the third period, Westfield gave up a lot of odd man rushes but freshman goaltender Nick Liberto came up with several nice saves. He finished with 37 saves on the night. UMass-Lowell would convert on a late 5 on 3 to make the final 4-2.
Westfield travels to University of New Haven on Friday night and then returns home on Saturday to face Bridgewater State. Both games are conference games.
